Shopify website cost UK 2026: if you’re planning an online store, “how much will Shopify actually cost me?” is probably your first question. The honest answer is that it depends on what you’re building.
A simple DIY store can cost under £50 a month to run. A fully custom store built by a professional typically costs between £1,500 and £15,000+ up front, plus monthly running costs.
This guide breaks down every cost involved in building and running a Shopify store in the UK in 2026, so you can budget properly and avoid surprises.
Shopify website cost UK: quick answer
| Cost type | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| Shopify subscription | £19–£344/month (depending on plan) |
| DIY store with a template | £0–£300 one-off |
| Freelancer-built store (customised theme) | £500–£1,500 |
| Custom-designed store (freelancer or small studio) | £1,500–£5,000 |
| Agency custom build | £5,000–£15,000+ |
| Apps | £0–£200+/month |
| Domain name | £8–£15/year |
| Ongoing maintenance and SEO | £50–£1,500/month |
Most small UK businesses launching a professional store land between £1,500 and £5,000 for the build, then £50–£200 a month to run it. That is the realistic Shopify website cost UK small businesses should plan for. You can see how I price projects on my web design pricing page.
1. What do Shopify’s subscription plans cost in the UK (2026)?
Shopify charges a monthly fee based on your plan. It covers hosting, SSL security and bandwidth, so you don’t pay for these separately. Here are the current UK prices, but always check Shopify’s UK pricing page for the latest figures.
- Starter: £5 a month
- Basic: £19 a month billed annually, or £25 monthly
- Grow: £49 a month billed annually, or £65 monthly
- Advanced: £259 a month billed annually, or £344 monthly
- Plus: from around £1,800 a month on a three-year term
New merchants can currently get their first three months for £1 a month on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and there is a 3-day free trial.
Which plan do you need?
- Basic suits new stores and those with one or two people managing the admin.
- Grow suits growing stores that need more staff accounts and lower card fees.
- Advanced suits established, higher-volume stores that need custom reports and the lowest transaction rates.
- Plus is for large brands and complex B2B or checkout needs.
Starter doesn’t let you build a full online store. It’s for selling through social media and links. Most businesses should start on Basic or Grow.
2. What are Shopify’s transaction and payment fees?
The subscription is only part of the cost. Every sale also carries payment processing fees.
- Shopify Payments charges a percentage plus a fixed fee per transaction, and the rate falls as you move up the plans. For UK cards, current rates are around 2.0% + 25p on Basic, 1.7% + 25p on Grow and 1.5% + 25p on Advanced.
- Third-party payment gateways (such as PayPal or others) add extra transaction fees on top of the gateway’s own charges. These are roughly 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced.
At £5,000 of monthly sales, transaction fees can easily exceed your subscription cost. If you sell a lot, the higher plan often pays for itself through lower rates. For a wider view of hosting, apps and payment costs, see Shopify’s guide to ecommerce website costs.
3. How much does a Shopify theme and design cost?
Your store’s design is the biggest one-off cost, and the range is wide.
Free or paid themes (£0–£300). Shopify has free themes, and paid themes usually cost £200–£350 one-off. This is fine if you’re comfortable setting it up yourself, but it takes time and often looks like every other store.
Customised theme by a freelancer (£500–£1,500). A developer configures a theme with your branding, sets up navigation and collections, and makes sure it works on mobile. This is the sweet spot for many new businesses.
Fully custom design (£1,500–£5,000). You get a unique design, custom sections, a stronger user experience and conversion-focused layouts. Most growing UK brands should aim for this level. You can see examples in my recent work.
Agency or enterprise build (£5,000–£15,000+). This includes strategy, custom features, complex integrations and a larger project team. It’s typical for larger catalogues and multi-market stores.
4. What do Shopify apps and integrations cost?
Apps add features Shopify doesn’t include out of the box. Typical costs:
- Product reviews: £0–£25/month
- Email and SMS marketing: £0–£100+/month
- Subscriptions: £20–£100/month
- Advanced search and filtering: £15–£60/month
- SEO tools: £10–£50/month
Start with only the apps you need. It’s common to see stores paying for 15 or more apps, many of which slow the site down and add up quickly.
5. Domain, email and legal essentials
- Domain name: around £8–£15 a year for a .co.uk or .com.
- Business email: £5–£10 per user per month with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
- Legal pages: UK stores need a privacy policy, terms, and returns and delivery information. Shopify provides templates, but you should check them for your business.
6. Product photography, copywriting and content
Great products still don’t sell without good images and descriptions.
- Product photography: £5–£30 per product, or a day rate of £250–£600.
- Product descriptions and copywriting: £10–£50 per product for professional, SEO-friendly copy.
- Branding and logo: £150–£1,500+.
7. How much does migrating to Shopify cost?
Moving from another platform such as WooCommerce, Wix or Magento to Shopify typically costs £300–£3,000+, depending on the number of products, customers and orders, and whether you need URL redirects to protect your Google rankings.
8. What ongoing costs come after launch?
Launching is the start, not the finish. Budget for:
- Maintenance and support: £50–£300/month for updates, fixes, app management and speed checks.
- SEO: £300–£1,500+/month for ongoing optimisation, content and technical work.
- Paid advertising: your ad spend plus management fees.
What does a typical Shopify budget look like?
Starter store (about £600–£1,500 setup, £30–£70/month). Basic plan, customised theme, a handful of apps, and your own product photos. Best for new brands testing an idea.
Growing store (about £2,000–£5,000 setup, £100–£300/month). Grow plan, custom design, conversion-focused layouts, email marketing and basic SEO. Best for established small businesses.
Scaling brand (£5,000–£15,000+ setup, £400–£1,500+/month). Grow or Advanced plan, fully custom build, integrations, ongoing SEO and support.
What hidden Shopify costs should you watch for?
- App creep. Monthly app fees add up and can slow the site.
- Transaction fees on third-party gateways. These are easy to miss.
- Theme customisation beyond your skills. Time spent fixing things yourself has a cost.
- No SEO from day one. A beautiful store nobody finds earns nothing.
- Redirects after migration. Skipping them can wipe out existing traffic.
How to keep your Shopify costs down
- Start on Basic or Grow and upgrade only when your sales justify it.
- Choose a well-built theme instead of paying for heavy custom features you don’t need yet.
- Add apps gradually and remove those you don’t use.
- Invest early in good product photography and SEO, because they drive sales.

How much does Shopify cost per month in the UK?
